When you think about your future self, what comes to mind?

Before writing a letter to the future you, take some time to imagine who they are and what their life might look like.

Doing this can help your current self think about the steps needed to get there, while also giving your future self something meaningful to reflect on later.

Write your thoughts down. They don't have to be perfect because writing down our ideas is part of the process.

As you write, think about what your future self might do with their time, who they might spend time with, what habits they might have, and what they would value most. You can also imagine a typical day in their life or collect images that represent the future you hope to create.

1. Get Writing!

You may be asking: Now that I've written these things down, what should my letter contain? Let me tell you!

I would highly encourage you to write this letter by hand if possible because it produces positive effects!

That said, consider adding the following in it:

  • Current date (MM/DD/YYYY)

  • Write about where you are as you write this letter for your future self

  • What you're currently doing with your life

  • Where you hope to be

  • Questions that cause you to reflect

Doing this will allow you to clearly reflect and visualize the person you once were and help you see your growth.

2. Reflect on Your Current Self's Life

As you answer these questions, answer them in the following way:

"By the time you read this I hope you would have/are..."

  • What are you hoping to accomplish?

  • What are you hoping to let go of?

  • What do you want to be spending your time on?

4. Ask Questions

Studying Music Video GIF by Jade LeMac Ask your future self these questions to see how you’ve changed:

  • Did you become who you were striving to be?

  • Are you happy with where you are?

  • Did you let go of what wasn't serving you?

  • What is something that surprised you along the way?

  • What were some of your favorite memories along the way?

  • What would you tell the version of you that wrote this letter?

These questions will allow you to reflect on your growth after some time has passed when the time to read your letter has come.

5. End on a Positive Note

In one sentence, tell yourself something positive and kind that will allow you the space to feel grateful. For example, it could be something like:

"After everything you are still standing and working towards your goals. I want to end this letter by telling you to never give up on your dreams! All of your wildest dreams are possible; don't forget it! With love, [your name]"

Most importantly, as you write this letter, use a tone that is kind and to talk to yourself the same way you would talk to a friend or a loved one.

A gratitude letter to your future self is more than a note, it’s a bridge. It shows you that gratitude isn’t just about what’s happening today, but also about training your brain to expect joy, love, and abundance in the days ahead.
